Water Therapy

Water Therapy has had positive effects on many type of physical problems. Water therapy exercises consist of a variety of treatments and exercises done in a pool and may be specifically designed to provide relief of different types of pain. Water therapy is used to condition and strengthen muscles.

Water Therapy offers many of the benefits of a land-based exercise program without the concussion caused by exercising on a hard surface. Water provides a much gentler environment, taking away much of the pain associated with regular exercises. Water Therapy exercises are tailored to the individual's needs.

Aquatic Therapy

Water Therapy is also referred to as Aquatic Therapy. The buoyancy of the water is a major benefit in Aquatic Therapy. This buoyancy helps bear the weight of the individual, thus reducing stress on the joints. Aquatic Therapy is easier and less painful to perform for this very reason. Aquatic Therapy utilizes hydrostatic pressure, which assists in decreasing joint and soft tissue swelling caused by an injury or arthritic disorder. The warmth of the water helps to relax muscles and increase blood flow to injured areas. This is especially helpful for patients with muscle spasms, back pain, and fibromyalgia.

Pool Therapy

Pool Therapy is another term used to refer to Water Therapy. Because Pool Therapy diminishes weight bearing stress, it is an excellant form of Physical Therapy for those with osteoarthritis and other conditions that make weight bearing painful. When immersed in a pool up to neck level, 90 percent of the body's weight is supported by the buoyancy of the water. Since exercising the joints is necessary to maintain flexibility, Pool Therapy is an excellent means to do so in a far less painful way.
