Congress created Medicaid in 1965 as a federal-state partnership originally designed to finance health care for the nation's underprivileged. It has expanded over time as a service and now is the largest social services program in state government. It provides for the healthcare needs of over 1,000,000 people. Medicaid pays for doctor, prescriptions, hospital, and nursing home needs. New Jersey has participated in the Medicaid program since 1970.
